Cinematic Orchestra's fourth studio album, Ma Fleur soars from start to finish. The disc opens with the all-too-brief "That Home" which showcases a new guest vocalist brought into the Orchestra clan, Montreal native Patrick Watson whose Coldplay-meets-Jeff-Buckley fragility fits inside the folds of the sparse melody perfectly; his contribution to the sweeping soundscape of closer "To Build a Home" proves equally spectacular, adding an increased vulnerability and richness to the music. "Time and Space," featuring enigmatic Lamb frontwoman Lou Rhodes, offers the perfect combination of vocal ache with the lushness of cello and violin, eventually expanding into a full contemporary-classical-meets-downtempo vibe. Former contributing vocalist Fontella Bass once again brings her timeless soul to the mix ("Breathe" and "Familiar Ground") which will delight longtime fans of the U.K. band. Fans of Cinematic Orchestra's more upbeat hip-hop and jazz numbers from previous releases will discover that there is nothing especially uptempo on this disc; in certain respects, the evenness of Zero 7 discs may provide a more apt comparison, contextually. While that may frustrate some, the power of Ma Fleur from beginning to end is a holistic package of sensuality and softness that makes for a nearly perfect, perfectly timeless release.

The aptly-named The Cinematic Orchestra was formed by Jason Swinscoe back in 1999. Jason arrived at London Bridge from Scotland with a background playing bass and guitar in bands and DJing. His head was full of ideas and influences, such as his love of jazz bass players, rhythm, sections and film soundtracks. Eight years and three albums later The Cinematic Orchestra return with the stunning Ma Fleur, their first full studio album since 2002s acclaimed Everyday.?Shortly after finishing Everyday, Swinscoe relocated from East London to Paris (where he began composing the album) and then to New York City (where the recordings were finished). Having completed a rough version by early 2005, Swinscoe gradually recruited suitable vocalists, for the atmospheres and themes of the album's conceptual center, a undeveloped screenplay of sorts. The remarkable Fontella Bass (the woman behind the legendary soul number Rescue Me as well as some of the Art Ensemble of Chicago’s finest moments) had worked on Everyday and was an obvious choice to voice the parts of the elderly, protagonist that Swinscoe envisioned. Lou Rhodes, of the Mercury Prize-nominated group Lamb, is not only a fantastic singer, but also a young mother, which made her perfect for the mid-life singer. The as-yet unheralded Patrick Watson, a remarkable vocalist from Montreal, became the youngest of the trio. From the subtle opener of That Home to the achingly beautiful finale and first single, To Build A Home, this is an, album which reaches for and finds a truth and honesty far beyond what we would normally expect, from such a record. If the mood is melancholy, Swinscoe and the musicians he works with manage to, make it an ultimately uplifting experience, perhaps in the end more about the love you find than the, love you lose.
